SOCS Virtual Alumni Meet 2024

 

The School of Computer Sciences (SOCS) at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, successfully conducted its Virtual Alumni Meet on February 24, 2024. The event, hosted on Google Meet, saw an impressive turnout with over 136 participants joining from different parts of the world. The agenda for the SOCS Virtual Alumni Meet 2024 was meticulously planned to ensure a comprehensive and engaging experience for all attendees.The event commenced with a warm welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Bindu V R, the esteemed Professor & Head of the School of Computer Sciences. This was followed by a presidential address accompanied by a PPT presentation, setting the tone for the rest of the proceedings. Prof. Dr. K. N. Ramachandran Nair, Founder Director (Retired), and Prof. Dr. R. Vijayakumar (Retired) graced the occasion with their insightful addresses, reminiscing about their time at SOCS and sharing valuable wisdom with the alumni. They suggested bringing PhD scholars into the alumni network, recognizing their contribution to the academic community and the potential benefits of their continued involvement. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of enhancing alumni connections and proposed ideas for providing more valuable benefits to alumni, fostering a stronger sense of community and support within SOCS.

Alumni Committee Office Bearers Election:  

     The highlight of the event was the election of the 2024 Alumni Committee Office Bearers. The elected executives, including Vipin Damodaran, Sujit Sudhi, Jeesmon, Eeswari, Shiju, Charan, Arun P R, Sreevishnu, Naveen, and Mehanas, were announced, marking a significant milestone in the alumni association’s journey.

Alumni WhatsApp Community Inauguration:  

   A momentous occasion, the launching and inauguration of the Alumni WhatsApp Community, aimed at fostering continued engagement and networking among alumni members.

Alumni Memory Sharing & Suggestions:  

   The event provided a platform for alumni to reminisce and share cherished memories and experiences from their time at SOCS. Alumni also extended their support and guidance to the current MSc batch, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and camaraderie within the SOCS community.

Discussion on Initiatives:  

   The revival of “Interface,” the technical meet of SOCS, garnered significant attention and discussion during the event. Alumni expressed enthusiasm for reinstating Interface as a platform for showcasing technical prowess, fostering innovation, and nurturing talent within the SOCS community.


Cleaning Day at the School of Computer Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam

On February 23, 2024, the School of Computer Sciences at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, organized a comprehensive cleaning day initiative aimed at maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the department premises. This event saw enthusiastic participation from MSc students, research scholars, faculty members, and non-teaching staff, all coming together to contribute to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly campus environment.

Activities Undertaken:

The cleaning day initiative encompassed various areas within the department premises, including laboratories, classrooms, gardens, verandas, and bathrooms. Participants diligently worked to clean almost every corner of the department, ensuring that no area was left unattended. The activities involved sweeping, mopping, dusting, and organizing materials to ensure a neat and orderly environment conducive to learning and research.

Participation:

The event witnessed a significant turnout, with MSc students, research scholars, faculty members, and non-teaching staff actively engaging in the cleaning activities. The collaborative effort and collective spirit demonstrated by all participants were commendable, reflecting a shared commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy campus environment.

Impact:

The cleaning day initiative not only resulted in immediate improvements in the cleanliness of the department premises but also had a broader impact on promoting environmental awareness and sustainability within the campus community. By actively participating in the cleaning activities, individuals were able to contribute to the larger goal of creating an eco-friendly campus and fostering a sense of responsibility towards preserving the environment.


Development and Implementation of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)

The 3-day workshop on the Development and Implementation of MOOCs was successfully conducted from January 22nd to 24th, 2024, at the Seminar Hall and Swayam Multimedia Lab, School of Computer Sciences. The program aimed to acquaint university teachers with the landscape of MOOCs and empower them to develop and implement their own courses. Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Aravindakumar inaugurated the programme. 

Day 1:

The workshop commenced with an insightful keynote address by Dr. M. Parthasarathy, shedding light on the significance of MOOCs in modern education. Participants engaged in interactive workshops and seminars focusing on understanding MOOCs’ landscape and effective teaching techniques for online platforms.

Day 2:

Dr. Parthasarathy guided the participants through the process of creating storyboards and content for MOOC classes. Teachers were introduced to new software and technologies for online class creation, with hands-on sessions conducted in the Swayam Multimedia Lab. Discussions and sharing of best practices enriched the learning experience.

Day 3:

On the final day, teachers showcased their implemented recorded classes, receiving valuable feedback from peers and the resource person. Meaningful discussions were held, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in MOOC development and implementation.


New Year Celebration at School of Computer Sciences

The School of Computer Sciences hosted New Year celebration on January 8th, 2024, bringing together faculty, staff, PhD scholars, and MSc students for a day of joy and camaraderie. The event kicked off with heartfelt wishes and speeches from respected faculty members, including Prof. Dr. Bindu V R, Prof. Dr. Pushpalatha, Prof. Dr. Anuj Mohammed, Dr. Abdul Jabbar, and Dr. Unnikrishnan. They shared their hopes and plans for the new year, setting a positive tone for the festivities.  

The celebration featured lively spot dance competitions and group games that kept everyone entertained and engaged. A highlight of the day was the exchange of gifts among participants, spreading happiness and goodwill.  Laughter and excitement filled the air throughout the event, creating cherished memories for all who attended. The success of the celebration marked a significant milestone for the School of Computer Sciences, showcasing its commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community. As the day came to a close, attendees left with smiles on their faces, looking forward to future celebrations and continued camaraderie.

Two-Day FDP Report: GPU Programming and Distributed Deep Learning with PyTorch

Mahatma Gandhi University’s School of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, in collaboration with the School of Computer Sciences and ACM Students Chapter, successfully hosted a two-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) on GPU Programming and Distributed Deep Learning with PyTorch from November 7-8, 2023. Conducted by Mahesh C, Assistant Professor at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology, the FDP featured seven insightful sessions covering a spectrum of topics, including distributed training, model optimization techniques, custom loss functions, multi-CPU and distributed computing, efficient data loading, and hyperparameter tuning. The event provided a platform for participants to explore advanced concepts and acquire practical skills applicable to their professional domains. The engaging sessions concluded with a comprehensive recap and an open Q&A, solidifying the FDP’s success in equipping attendees with expertise in GPU programming and distributed deep learning using PyTorch.

 


Global Academic Carnival -2023

Global Academic Carnival was held in Kottayam city from 17th to 19th January under the auspices of Mahatma Gandhi University. The program was held with the aim of imparting knowledge to the students about academic research programs, start-up, translational research  of the university schools and affiliated institutions.

Open Day Programme 26.08.2022

School of Computer Sciences has successfully organised technical Exhibition as part of the Open Day celebration of the University. The school has showcased its infrastructure, research developments and working models based on AI, Crypto Currency, Robotics and IoT. More than 605 number of people visited the department and gave motivating feedbacks about the exhibition. This include people from various sectors of the society starting from school students, graduate students, research scholars, Staff of the University, public and so on. The Research Scholars and all M.Sc students and all Faculty of the School actively participated for making this event a grand success.

Shasthrayaan- “Open House Programme”

The School as part of Shasthrayaan- “Open House Programme” of the University, conducted a 2 Day exhibition on 26th and 27th of February 2018. The aim of Shastrayaan was to highlight the overall research contributions and other academic activities carried out in the university through the various research and teaching schools and centers.  The Exhibition was open for students from schools and colleges and also for general public. All the students and research scholars of the School participated in this event by explaining posters and models in various current research areas, Computer Networks, Wired and Wireless Communication, Machine Learning, Computer Security, Cloud Computing, Computer machine assembling, and Software Installation etc.

Around 450 people including  Vice Chancellor, IQAC members, and professors of other Schools of the University, higher officials of Athirampuzha Grama Panchayath, school and college students, employees, people outside the universities, teachers from other colleges etc.  attended the Shastrayaan exhibition at the School. They found this as a wonderful initiative. This exhibition made them informative about various personalities, technologies and terminologies in computer science. From the feedback received, it is understood that people from different facets of the society, other than Computer Science field found this exhibition as a great opportunity to enable them familiar with the R&D activities in the School and many technologies that they use in their day-to-day life without knowing the background. Also students from Colleges got a chance to know about the emerging trends and technologies in the field of Computer Science. The neatly prepared posters and models were very much helpful in understanding the various applications and concepts deeply.
