A team of researchers from the School of Computer Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, has been granted an Indian Patent for their invention titled “Method and System for Rare Pattern Detection in Surveillance Video, and Super-Resolved Real-Time Alerts.”
The team includes Mintu Movi, Nisha Shamsudin, Dr. Abdul Jabbar P, and Prof. (Dr.) Bindu V R. Mintu Movi is pursuing a PhD in rare pattern mining under the guidance of Dr. Abdul Jabbar P and Prof. (Dr.) Bindu V. R. Nisha Shamsudin is pursuing a PhD in super-resolution under Prof. (Dr.) Bindu V. R.
This patented invention introduces a complete, automated surveillance solution capable of detecting and classifying rare or suspicious activities in both real-time and archived video data. Key to the system’s innovation is its integration of human-centric visual features, including posture, proximity, facial attributes, and contextual cues, with optimized clustering and enhanced data reduction techniques. This enables intelligent and semantically meaningful classification of behaviors as rare or frequent, unlike conventional systems. This significantly enhances event classification, reduces memory usage by 75%, hard disk access by 90%, and processing time by 83%, while retaining critical data.
The system improves video clarity with a super-resolution component that enhances footage quality in low-light or distant capture scenarios. A context-aware alerting feature sends real-time notifications via WhatsApp with enriched visuals, reducing irrelevant alerts and improving response efficiency.
It overcomes common challenges like manual video inspection, poor footage quality, redundant storage, and inefficient post-event search. It enables law enforcement agencies to access archived video segments swiftly, improving crime analysis and incident reconstruction. The system is fully automated, hardware-independent, and compatible with any existing CCTV infrastructure. A smart user interface supports advanced, content-based search, further boosting review efficiency.
This is the fifth fully computer program-based patent granted in India, joining companies like Ericsson, Microsoft, Blackberry, and Allani Ferid. It is also the first patent from the School of Computer Sciences at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Its novelty was validated through comparison with internationally sanctioned patents US20070279490A1, US20180174412A1, and US20230005360A1, demonstrating clear advancements and originality.
The project earned the Best Research Innovative Practice Award from the Research Incubation Programme (RINP), Mahatma Gandhi University, and received seed funding from the Research Innovation Network Kerala (RINK), Kerala Startup Mission, Govt. of Kerala. The university praised the inventors for this milestone, which enhances India’s leadership in AI-driven surveillance and supports public safety through scalable, intelligent solutions.
