SOCS Student Excels at Kerala Science Slam 2024 | Fidha Farha

Event: Kerala Science Slam '24 – Regional Science Slam
Date: November 9, 2024
Time: 9:00 AM
Venue: Science Park, C-SiS, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT)
Organizer: Kerala Science Slam Committee

Fidha Farha, a student of the School of Computer Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, participated in the prestigious Kerala Science Slam ’24. This event aimed to promote science communication by enabling young scientists and researchers to present their work in a dynamic, engaging, and accessible manner to a diverse audience.

Her presentation showcased both technical depth and public engagement skills, aligning with the Science Slam’s mission of making complex scientific ideas understandable and interesting for the general public. Through her talk, she effectively conveyed her research ideas, methodology, and potential real-world applications, demonstrating strong communication skills and subject expertise.

She presented her research on enhancing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) using artificial intelligence. Her work addresses the challenge of limited access to high-quality MRI scanners, especially in smaller hospitals, by transforming low-resolution scans into high-resolution images without costly equipment. The study employs a specially modified U-Net deep learning architecture with residual learning to preserve fine details and improve image clarity. Trained on real MRI brain scan data, the system reconstructs sharper, more detailed images, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of neurological conditions. This innovative approach has the potential to bring advanced imaging capabilities to resource-limited areas, making accurate medical care more accessible and affordable.

The Kerala Science Slam series is a platform for emerging researchers to share innovative ideas, promote public awareness of science and technology, and foster scientific curiosity. Fidha’s active participation reflects her commitment to bridging the gap between academic research and public understanding.

The event also brought together participants from various institutions across Kerala, creating an environment for collaboration, networking, and knowledge sharing. Fidha’s involvement not only highlighted her academic abilities but also showcased the capabilities of Mahatma Gandhi University’s students in competitive scientific forums.
